Lazy Summer
I formally apologize for summer laziness. Keeping up with a new newsletter during the summer, while having young kids, turned out to be a little more challenging than expected. But we’re back! With three new stories, one of which that had a major impact on a whole industry.

This Week’s Stories
Only three stories this week. One short, one medium, and one very long. All worth the read.
📸 Xenon Death Flash: a free physics lesson - Great write-up from the Raspberry Pi team about a very curious bug that crashes Raspberry Pi 2 boards.
🍻 Greatest bug I never fixed - In which a developer realizes the cause of a bug in his World of Warcraft addon years later. I’m always fascinated by game bugs like this. Especially with a phenom like World of Warcraft. So many moving parts.
🚗 Toyota Case: Single Bit Flip That Killed - I first learned of this case from the Bit Flip episode of Radiolab (which I highly recommend). I never thought of the amount of redundancy needed in software systems for vehicles until I heard this story. Fascinating stuff.

I don’t think there’s a day that goes by that I don’t open Notion. I use it for journaling, tracking my projects, and even my video game backlog.

See You Next Week
Heads up - I’m starting to run out of stories! If you know of any great stories, or have one of your own, please send it my way. Also looking for stories that aren’t published anywhere else. I have one of my own stories about a big social media company that I’ll be adding to the site in the weeks to come. If you have a great story or just want to drop a message my way, you can respond to this email, or send me an email at submissions@500mile.email.
Bye! 👋
